Raiders rally, beat Tullahoma in extra innings

County baseball got its revenge C offee against Tullahoma Friday night.

Trailing the Wildcats by three runs heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Red Raiders stormed back to tie it before going on to secure a 5-4, eight-inning win in front of their home crowd.

The victory also gave Coffee County a series split with its cross-county rival after falling 3-2 during the two teams’ previous meeting in Tullahoma on March 20.

Scoreless through the first three innings, the Red Raiders got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth when Jaxon Pruitt made it home from third base on a passed ball.

Tullahoma answered in the top of the fifth, starting with a double from Phillip Lemmon that brought in three runs. Up next to the plate for the Wildcats was Parke Fulkes, who sent Lemmon home from second on a line-drive single to make it a 4-1 Tullahoma lead.

Needing at least three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give themselves a chance, the Red Raiders got it started with Carter Bell reaching first base on an error. Matt Moore followed at the plate and singled on a line drive to center field, putting runners on second and first with no outs.

Up next in the batting order was Davis McKenzie, who proceeded to knock a line drive out to right field. Austin Gipson, Bell’s pinch runner, rounded third and scored first, with Moore following right behind as McKenzie tripled to cut the Tullahoma lead to 4-3.

Not long after, Preston Steele connected on a ground ball to get McKenzie across the plate, tying it up at 4-4 and ultimately forcing extras.

After keeping Tullahoma off the board in the top of the eighth, Moore came to the plate in the bottom of the inning with two outs and Pruitt on second base. Moore went on to send a ground ball out to shortstop, bringing home Pruitt in the process for the walk-off win.

Coffee County finished the game with seven hits, led by Moore with three. McKenzie, Abellana, Pruitt and Boone Floyd had one hit each.

McKenzie was credited with two of the Red Raiders’ four RBI, with one each for Steele and Moore.

Leiton Yancer pitched the first seven innings, finishing with nine strikeouts, eight hits, four runs and one walk. Kasen Shores relieved him in the top of the eighth inning, adding two strikeouts and one hit in this span.

The win improved Coffee County to 9-6 on the season.
