Lady Raiders rout Shelbyville

Four and a half innings was all Coffee County softball needed to pick up a district win last Tuesday night.Hosting Shelbyville, the Lady Raiders got on the board early but exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the fourth to seal an 11-1 victory over the Golden Eaglettes. This was also the team’s second straight district win.Scoreless after one inning, Coffee County got on the board in the bottom of the second when Yeidy Cruz drove in Maggie Montgomery from second base on a line drive. The Lady Raiders added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning when Bailey Hale ran home from second on a line drive from Lily Norman.
Shelbyville was able to cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth, but Coffee County went on to answer in the bottom of the inning.
Taylor McBride got it started with a line drive double to bring Raelyn Wainwright home. McBride scored not long after on a ground ball to center field from Cara Newlin, pushing the Coffee County lead to 4-1. The Lady Raiders went on to add three straight runs on three straight at-bats to make it a 7-1 game.
Coffee County continued to push ahead from there, adding four more runs before the inning’s conclusion to build a 10-run lead.
Norman followed up with three more strikeouts in the top of the fifth inning to bring the game to a close.
Coffee County finished with 13 hits, led by Norman with three. Montgomery and McBride followed right behind with two hits each. Newlin, Cruz, Wainwright, Ella Arnold, Kenzie Shelton and Haleigh Skipper each had one.
The Lady Raiders were also credited with 10 RBI, including two each for Arnold, Norman and McBride. Newlin, Shelton, Montgomery and Cruz each had one.
Norman made her presence felt in the circle as well, striking out 12 and holding Shelbyville to two hits, one run and one walk over the course of the game.
The win put Coffee County at 9-8 overall and 2-1 in district play.
Lady Raiders blank Cookeville Coffee County opened its week with a trip to Cookeville for a district matchup last Monday. The Lady Raiders took care of business quickly, holding the Lady Cavaliers scoreless on the way to a 15-0 victory in three-anda-half innings.
Coffee County came away with 11 hits, including two each for Norman and Montgomery. One of Norman’s two hits came as a home run in the top of the first inning. Arnold, Shelton, Newlin, Hale, Wainwright, Skipper and Madison Waller each had one hit.
The Lady Raiders also had 12 RBI, led by Montgomery with three. Newlin, Norman and Wainwright followed with two each. Arnold, Shelton and Hale each had one RBI.
Norman pitched the first two innings, striking out six and holding Cookeville to one walk in this span. Cruz closed it out in the bottom of the third inning and added three strikeouts to complete the team no-hitter.
CHS beats Carl Sandburg in tournament finale
The Lady Raiders closed out their Warrior Classic schedule with an 8-4, five-inning victory over Carl Sandburg (Orland Park, Ill.) in Murfreesboro last Saturday.
Coffee County posted nine hits over the course of the day, with two each for Wainwright, Hale and Norman. Waller, Samantha Johnson and Adalyn Wild all had one hit each.
The team also came away with seven RBI, led by Hale and Waller with two each. Norman, Wild and Cruz each had one RBI.
Cruz led it off in the circle, coming out with three strikeouts, six hits, four runs and one walk in four innings. Norman relieved her for the top of the fifth inning, adding one strikeout and one hit before the game’s conclusion.
Lady Raiders split Friday Warrior Classic schedule
Coffee County was back in Murfreesboro for a pair of tournament games against Booneville (Booneville, Ind.) and Kankakee Valley (Wheatfield Township, Ind.) last Friday.
Opening the day against Booneville, the Lady Raiders took an early lead on the way to a 9-1, five-inning victory. They were unable to follow this up against Kankakee Valley, falling 7-1 in six innings to close out the day.
Against Booneville, Coffee County connected on 10 hits, with two each for Norman, Waller and Hale. Wainwright, Newlin, Skipper and Maddi Scott each had one hit.
Waller was credited with two of the Lady Raiders’ seven RBI. Norman, Skipper, Wainwright, Scott and Hale had one RBI each. Norman pitched all five innings, striking out nine and holding Booneville to four hits, one run and three walks.
Coffee County finished with five hits against Kankakee Valley, led by Cruz with two. Wainwright, Waller and McBride had one hit each.
Waller had the team’s lone RBI.
Skipper pitched the first four innings, striking out two and giving up eight hits, four runs and two walks. Cruz closed it out, adding four strikeouts, two hits, three runs and one walk over the last two innings.
