Members of the Kiwanis Club of Manchester celebrated the installation of its new officers for the upcoming year during a meeting and dinner at The Oak Restaurant in Manchester Thursday Oct. 5.

Outgoing club president David Creek was succeeded by Prater Powell, who officially begins his fourth term as president.

Creek said he enjoyed his tenure as president over the last year and the time spent with fellow club members.

“The fellowship with each other, what is the old saying, we work hard and we play hard,” Creek said. “We enjoy each other’s company and we enjoy doing things for the community.”

Creek said the Kiwanis hosted three fundraisers within the last year, including an annual golf tournament, online auction as well as a partnership with Logan’s Roadhouse.

“We do our fundraisers and the biggest thing is what we do for the kids,” he said. “All of that money goes back to doing things for the children or a needy family. We just try to do good things for our community.”

Powell said he is an original charter member of the Manchester Kiwanis Club from its founding in April 1975.

“I think there are three charter members left and I was one of the three, and I was the second president,” Powell said. “I enjoy being with the club and working with them and it means a whole lot to me to have this honor to be able to direct this club for another year.”

Powell said one of his objectives as club president is to increase membership.

“We have got several new members this past year, we have been working on our membership,” he said. “Our main project is to help the children of Manchester and Coffee County and we have had some setbacks because of some issues that were not necessarily ours, but we had to deal with so we are looking for projects that we can use to serve the children of Manchester. That is our main goal.”

The Kiwanis Club of Manchester meets the first and third Thursday of every month at 6 p.m. at The Oak Restaurant in Manchester.
