Red Raiders place fifth, Lady Raiders place second in Christmas tournaments

On Friday, the Red Raiders came back to beat Caverna to place fifth in the Don Webb Classic while the Lady Raiders lost to McMinn Central to finish second in the Lenoir City Christmas Tournament.
In their third and final game of the Don Webb Classic, the Red Raiders faced the Caverna Colonels from Horse Cave, Kentucky.
It was the Colonels that set the pace at the start, leading the Red Raiders 18-5 at the end of the first quarter.
Finding themselves in an early hole, the Red Raiders started climbing back, outscoring Caverna 18-11 in the second quarter as the Colonels still led at halftime, 29-23.
Coffee County kept the momentum going into the third quarter, as the two teams found themselves deadlocked at 37-37 heading into the fourth.
The Red Raiders charged ahead in the final period, beating Caverna 56-53.
Scoring for the Red Raiders were Cooper Reed with 16 points, Jayden Carter with 10 points, Jackson Shemwell and Courtland Ferrar with eight points each, Brady Wright with seven points, Cayden Trail with five points and Camden Hunt with two points.
The Red Raiders are now 8-9 on the season and their next game will be a boys only matchup at Franklin County on Thursday, Jan. 4.
In Lenoir City, the Lady Raiders faced the McMinn Central Lady Chargers for a second time this season with the first matchup occurring in the Bearette Thanksgiving Classic back on Nov. 24, a game Coffee won 55-32.
However, this game would turn out to be quite different.
McMinn Central had the edge at the start, as the Lady Chargers were up 19-11 after the first quarter.
The Lady Raiders couldn’t seem to buy a basket in the second as the Lady Chargers piled on to their score to lead 30-14 at the half.
The Lady Chargers continued to pour it on in the second half as Coffee trailed 53-26 heading into the fourth quarter where they would go on to lose, 69-33.
Scoring for the Lady Raiders were Jules Ferrell with 13 points, Olivia Vinson with seven points, Natalie Barnes with six points, Audri Patton with four points and Ava McIntosh with three points.
The Lady Raiders dropped just their third game of the year and are now 15-3.
Next up for the Lady Raiders will be the first district game of the year as they take on Shelbyville Central on Tuesday, Jan. 9.
