Red Raider Soccer suffers first loss of the season

The undefeated start to the season for the CCCHS Red Raiders came to an end on Monday night, as the Red Raiders fell 3-1 in their first loss of the season to Shelbyville Central.

Unlike their first matchup on Mar. 14 that ended in a 0-0 draw, there was plenty of scoring to be had in this game, but mostly for the Golden Eagles.

Shelbyville would strike first after 12 minutes of play, then score again at the 31 minute mark to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Four minutes into the second half, the Golden Eagles would extend their lead to 3-0.

The Red Raiders had struggled on the attack throughout the game, but late in the second half, they had several opportunities to score. With a few minutes remaining in the game, Coffee County finally broke through for a goal as Cayden Trail scored on a corner kick by Joel Barrera.

However, the late game surge would be too late, and the Red Raiders suffered their first loss of the season, 3-1.

The loss also marked the first time that the Red Raiders surrendered multiple goals in a game this season.

“You have to give Shelbyville credit,” said Coach Robert Harper. “They’re the best team we’ve played so far this year and probably the best we’ll play all year. They have size and speed and they do an outstanding job at possessing the ball. We could have done a better job clearing the ball out of our end, but it’s one game and there’s still plenty more to be played.”

The Red Raiders are now 6-1-2 on the season and will play host to Warren County on Tuesday, Apr. 16 at 7:00 pm for another district battle at Raider Academy.
