Those needing to dispose of their worn out or distressed American flag will soon be able to leave it at the Coffee County Administrative Plaza in a drop box provided by Coffee County Veterans Association.

The Coffee County Capital Outlay Committee approved at the July 11 meeting a request by Coffee County Veterans Association members Lamar Wilkie, Stephen Sember and Bob Mullins to place boxes at the Mayor’s Office entrance and at the Courthouse on the square.

They said that box will be made from a repurposed USPS letter box. Flags dropped off will be collected and stored by the CCVA until the next flag retirement ceremony held each June at the Coffee County Veterans Building on Shelton Rd.

“Every June we have a ceremony were we retire them with dignity—we burn them,” Sember said.

Commissioner Tim Brown said “This is something that we need.”

Brown spearheaded the county’s side by helping clear the process of removing two disused publication racks from CCAP.

Capital Outlay Chairman Terry Hershman said commended the group for their efforts on the project.

“We thank you and we appreciate your service,” Hershman said.
