Hillsboro Food Company, recently opened at 7403 Hillsboro Highway is a hybrid diner and grocery, owned and operated by the Tomberlin family that offers a varied daily menu and some of the best meats south of Manchester.

Lauren Tomberlin said the cafe side serves breakfast plates, grab-and go breakfast items and lunch specials that change daily.

“Breakfast is a traditional country-style breakfast,” she said. And they are really good hamburgers. The grocery side is small scale — pretty much just what you need to feed your family.”

Tomberlin said the Hillsboro community has been very welcoming. She said her parents have worked very hard getting a business going that the community can be proud of.

Brandon Tomberlin said he and his wife were not really looking to get into the restaurant business.

“We were looking for an opportunity to do something different…but it came available,” he said. “The building came up for auction. We were the lucky bidders.”

The Tomberlins renovated the old grocery store, mostly cosmetic improvements. They built ADA compliant bathrooms for the cafe, and built a new separate meat room to have more space for the kitchen.

“We tried to source out all the tables and chairs locally,” he said. “Our decor, one of our signs says Hillsboro Food Store. This was Hillsboro Food Store years ago when the Bagley’s owned the store.”

Tomberlin said Bagley heir, Allan Bagely is a butcher at the new store.

“We are really happy to keep that family history here at the store and have him with us, but not just him. We have a great crew,” Tomberlin said.

“People warned me when got into this that the hard part would be employees, but we’ve had nothing but great employees. They are putting their all into it just as they have something invested in it as well.”

Tomberlin wants to thank the community for all the support the store has received.

Like his daughter, Tomberlin shared how great the cheeseburgers are.

Hillsboro Food Company’s cheeseburgers are 7 oz. wagyu beef that more than fill the bun for $6.99.
