Raiders slay Dragons

In a Saturday afternoon tilt, the Lady Raiders held off a third quarter comeback by the Lady Dragons to win 60-47 while the Red Raiders handled the Dragons 68-58 in a sweep of York Institute.

After a dominant win over Tullahoma on Friday night, the Lady Raiders turned their attention to the York Lady Dragons, a team coming off of a Class AA State Semifinals appearance last year.

The Lady Raiders would defend well in the first quarter, holding the Lady Dragons without a field goal for seven and a half minutes while pulling ahead 13-3.

Points were plenty in the second quarter for both teams, but the Lady Raiders still outscored York 24-18 to build a halftime lead of 37-21.

The Lady Dragons clawed their way back into it in the third quarter, outscoring Coffee County 12-2 to whittle the Lady Raider lead down to 39-33 entering the fourth quarter.

York drew as close as four points within the lead, but the Lady Raiders held on for a 60-47 win to improve to 8-0 on the season.

Meanwhile, the Red Raiders were looking to rebound after a close loss to Tullahoma on Friday night.

The Red Raiders raced out with an 8-0 run at the start, then outscored York 15-6 the rest of the first quarter for a 23-6 lead heading into the second.

The Dragons battled back in the second, outscoring Coffee 17-14, but the Red Raiders still led 37-23 at the halftime break.

York would outscore Coffee County 35-31 over the final two quarters, but the Red Raiders held on for a 68-58 win.

With the win, the Red Raiders improve to 3-4 on the season.
