New shelter site work sees setback

Construction work on the new Coffee County Animal Control Shelter could run into a costly overrun due to an unforeseen problem getting stable footing for the structure.
According to Commissioner Jimmy Hollandsworth’s report to the Health, Welfare and Recreation Department at the May 22 meeting, core sampling at the site shows the gravel and concrete pad may not be sufficient to support the shelter.
“They’re going to have to dig that. Dig under the clay…and pack it full of shot rock,” Hollandsworth said.
Hollandsworth estimated an additional expense of anywhere from $50,000-100,000.
“We just don’t know,” he said.
The additional work would have to be bid out and approved by the Capital Outlay Committee.
Hollandsworth said Capital Outlay Chairman Terry Hershman recently toured the site to get a better idea of the situation.
