The Manchester Time received a second place awards for best news photo and best single editorial June 28 at the Tennessee Press Association’s State Press Contests announced during a luncheon held at the Hilton in Memphis.

Times  staff members John Coffelt, Matthew Burnette and Nathan Havenner received first place nods for stories entered in the Tullahoma News in Best Business Coverage.

For the Manchester Times’ second place Best Single editorial, the Arkansas Press Association judges said that it was a “Great example of a strong opinion without hitting the reader between the eyes with a hammer. Well-reasoned editorial. It’s clear the writer and the newspaper not only covers local govt. but understands what’s going on and isn’t afraid to speak up.  Enjoyed the conversation style of presenting this issue.”

A Times photo from the downtown stroll grabbed a second place  Best News Photograph award featuring Mrs. Claus.

Judges called it a “charming and candid holiday photograph that captures the warmth and excitement of a town Christmas event. The perspective and framing make it unique, but some underexposed areas slightly detract from the overall impact. With a slight shift of angle or composition/cropping and exposure tweaks, this could be an even stronger image.”

Editor John Coffelt said that he is proud of his team and the solid work each members adds.

“Every member of our staff is committed to solid journalism,” Coffelt said. “While we don’t write stories to win awards, it is always nice when our peers in the field see quality in our work.”
