Coffee County girls’ soccer took care of business in its final home game of the regular season Thursday evening.
Welcoming Huntland, the Lady Raiders went up early and did not let up on the way to an 8-0 routing. The win further gave the team’s graduating class a win on its senior night.
“I can’t even put it into words. It’s so amazing that they all got to be on the field together and pull out such a big win,” Coffee County coach Megan Srofe said. “This season has just gotten better each game and I’m super proud of my girls. They’ve been working so hard and the morale is obviously a lot higher now. Just super proud of them.”
Lilly Matherne got it started less than three minutes in, scoring a goal with 37:44 left in the first half to put Coffee County up 1-0. Matherne followed this up with two more goals around the 19:04 mark and around the 11:04 mark to complete a hat trick with over 10 minutes left until the break.
Bailey Barsenas followed up with a goal of her own with 5:46 on the clock, before Matherne added one more goal with 1:56 remaining to send the Lady Raiders into halftime with a 5-0 lead.
“I stayed 30 minutes after practice actually (Wednesday) because my shot’s been a little off and I knew I needed to play for my seniors because this is gonna be their last game on this field,” Matherne said of her first-half effort. “I wanted to get the energy up early in the game, so I knew that scoring early would’ve gotten everybody pumped up, everybody ready to play and everybody ready to score and get it going.”
Tia Buchanan got the Coffee County offense going in the second half with a penalty kick goal around the 31:05 mark. Barsenas followed up with her second goal of the night with 25:14 left to play, before Buchanan added her second with 4:35 remaining to bring the game to what would be its final score.
The win continued a momentum shift for Coffee County that began with its mid-season victory over Fayetteville on Sept. 8. Since then, the Lady Raiders have won six out of their last seven matchups, with their lone loss in this span coming on Sept. 23 on the road against Shelbyville.
Coffee County will look to close out its regular-season slate with a road win over Giles County next Tuesday.
