DA Mulroy fires back at Sen. Taylor over investigation into Tami Sawyer courthouse confrontation
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A war of words continues between Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy and Tennessee Sen. Brent Taylor (R-Memphis).
This time, it was over an investigation by the DA’s office into a courthouse confrontation involving General Sessions Court Clerk Tami Sawyer. In a social media post, Taylor said he questions Mulroy’s decision to not pursue charges after video surfaced showing a heated exchange between Sawyer and deputies outside the Shelby County Courthouse in Downtown Memphis in October.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) looked into the encounter. Based on the agency’s evidence, the DA’s office determined no crime was committed.

In a statement, Mulroy said Taylor was misinformed — adding that state law does not allow the release of the TBI files.
“We make decisions based on facts,” Mulroy said.
Below is Taylor’s statement on the Tami Sawyer investigation:
Last month, in yet another attempt to gaslight the public, DA Mulroy announced that, “after a thorough review of the facts,” his office declined to pursue criminal charges against General Sessions Court Clerk Tami Sawyer for allegedly knowingly facilitating a security guard bringing a gun into the courthouse. I guess his explanation makes sense if you don’t think about it.
However, I have it on good authority that DA Mulroy’s request for an investigation to the TBI so severely narrowed the scope that it was impossible to fully investigate the situation. It is my understanding that the TBI could only interview one individual, and Mulroy perhaps limited the TBI’s ability to fully inquire into whether “Tirade Tami” specifically instructed, requested, or knowingly allowed the security guard to enter the courthouse armed or to evade security.
Why does Mulroy want to severely limit the TBI’s investigation? Why not allow interviews with the Sheriff’s office and security personnel? Why not interview additional security guards? Why not review surveillance footage? Why not interview “Tirade Tami” herself? Why did he restrict the TBI’s ability to conduct a completely open and independent investigation?
Because: Our Soros-backed DA has a fundamental integrity problem in how he runs his office. We’ve seen it time and time again. And then he gaslights the public on crime stats, on office initiatives, and now on this investigation of Tirade Tami Sawyer.
My message to the DA is simple: I am demanding that DA Mulroy RELEASE THE “TIRADE TAMI” FILES! If you stand by your decision, release the files and let the public see how you exercised your discretion.
To #MakeMemphisMatter, I will continue to hold Mulroy accountable. I will not let him be the weak-link in the unprecedented opportunity presented by the Memphis Safe Task Force.
DA Mulroy’s office sent the following statement to FOX13 as a response:
“Sen. Taylor is characteristically misinformed on many fronts. First, state law forbids this office from releasing the TBI investigative file. Second, contrary to Sen. Taylor’s assertion, our office, including me personally, did in fact review the video footage of the incident, which included all the interactions of the deputies with Clerk Sawyer. Had any of that indicated any reason to suspect Clerk Sawyer of committing a crime, we would have interviewed her as well.
Sen. Taylor has political animosity toward Clerk Sawyer and political reasons for trying to sow doubt about the TBI investigation. In contrast, we make decisions not based on politics but on the facts and the law.”
