Man dies after being shot in the stomach when argument leads to gunfire, police say
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A man has died after being shot in the stomach early Friday morning when officers who were working another scene nearby overheard people arguing followed by gunfire, police said.
According to the Memphis Police Department (MPD), officers were responding to an alarm call at Libertas School of Memphis when they heard an argument followed by several gunshots. They drove about a block to North Trezevant Street and found a man with a gun in his hand, police said.
The call came in around 4:40 a.m.
MPD said the officers also realized another man was shot in his stomach. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, police said.
“From what we know, the officers literally heard the argument going and they heard a couple gunshots,” MPD Maj. Kimberly Coller said. “And when they pulled down to the area to investigate what was going on, they could see suspect with a weapon in his hand and they realized we had a victim that had been shot.”
43-year-old Tommy Applewhite was charged with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault, being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun, and employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.
Police said that, after Applewhite had been charged, the victim died at the hospital, and the case was turned over to the homicide bureau for further investigation.
