Tenant accused in deadly East Memphis apartment shooting speaks out
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The man who admitted to shooting a man who broke into his apartment is out of jail and speaking to FOX13.
Marques Griffin is the man whose apartment got broken into. He’s charged with voluntary manslaughter.
“Never thought I would do something like that one day. Never thought I would go through this,” Griffin said.
Last week, a man broke into Griffin’s apartment on Robin Hood Lane in Sherwood Forest around 3 a.m. Thursday morning. Griffin said when he heard the break-in, he grabbed his gun from under his pillow and went downstairs where he confronted the man.
According to information from police, Griffin told police the man who broke in told him “I didn’t know anyone lived here.” Griffin told police the man then walked out his front door.
Griffin said with the man leaving his apartment he still feared for his life. “Yes, sir. Of course. It wouldn’t have went down like that if I wasn’t,” Griffin said.
Griffin said he was the only one in the home at the time of the shooting.
Griffin told FOX13 that he’s never been in trouble with the law and he’s experiencing a new world that’s made his normal life abnormal. Asked if he would do anything differently, he said, “This is my first time in a position like this. I just thought what I did was right.”
Griffin is due in court Monday morning.
