Lawmakers negotiate possible plan for state takeover of MSCS

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – As Tennessee lawmakers discussed a possible state takeover of Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS), the state House decided Wednesday morning not to approve the Senate version of the plan.

Now, lawmakers from the Tennessee Senate and House could go to a “conference committee,” which is a series of high-stakes negotiations held behind closed doors.

Both sides want to take over the school district but can’t agree on how to do it. It’s an issue that’s been brewing since last year, when the school board fired then-MSCS Superintendent Dr. Marie Feagins.
