Lady Raider wrestlers finish runner-up at Region 5 duals

The Coffee County girls’ wrestling team reached new heights Wednesday, taking part in the TSSAA Region 5 Duals for the first time in school history.
The Lady Raiders earned a runner-up finish at the event, taking down Shelbyville 36-30 before falling to Riverdale 36-29 in the championship.
Against Shelbyville, Coffee County’s wins began in the 100-pound weight class with Sophia Rodriguez winning by fall over Calli Ziegler at the 5:10 mark. Jasmine Norris followed this up in the 126-pound weight division with a win by fall over Jasmine Monroy-Noriega, with the fall coming at the 1:03 mark. Up next was Jianna Bare at 145 pounds, who took down Priscilla Fariaz via a fall with 2:19 left on the board. Ellysia Jennings went on to win by fall over Mariah Nowlin in the 165-pound division, forcing the fall with 1:10 left on the clock.
Raianna Gault went on to defeat Lili Salazar in the 185-pound bout, winning by fall at the 1:11 mark. Keyauna Hill closed it out with a forfeit win in the 235-pound weight class.
In the championship duals against Riverdale, Rodriguez got it started in the 100-pound weight class with a win by fall over Natalie Rizo. Norris added a win by fall in the 120-pound weight division over Charlie Dowell. Gabrielle Silva followed right behind in the 126-pound class, winning by fall over Destiney Robinson. Bare picked up a win by forfeit at 145 pounds. Up next was Jennings, who came out on top for a 17-1 technical fall victory over Danika Mealer in the 165-pound bout.
Up next for the Lady Raiders are the TSSAA sectional duals, which are slated for Saturday.
Red Raiders rout LaVergne Tuesday
Coffee County wrestling opened the week with a home match against LaVergne for its senior night Tuesday evening. The Red Raiders took care of business, dominating the duals action to win 64-10.
Malachi Nelson opened things up with a forfeit win in the 150-pound weight class. Eli McLean followed with a 19-1 technical fall victory over Timothy Childs in the 165-pound weight division. Up next was Kameron Stafford-Turner, who won by fall over Caleb Carter in the 175-pound bout, forcing the fall at the 53-second mark. Joshua Mainville added another win by fall over Cedric Lewis in the 190-pound division, with the fall coming at the 58-second mark.
Coffee County proceeded to pick up four more forfeit wins, including Kerry Norris at 285 pounds, Dyson Leverette at 113 pounds, Marcus Uselton at 120 pounds and Jesse Lester at 126 pounds. Aidan Lindsay went on to defeat Michael Clayton in the 132-pound weight class, coming out on top 18-2 for a technical fall victory. Carlos Valle-Martinez followed with a win by fall over Landen Kelch in the 138-pound bout, forcing the fall with 3:38 on the board. Toccoa Gaines wrapped up the evening with a forfeit win in the 144-pound weight division.
Coffee County will wrap up its regular-season schedule with a duals matchup at Moore County Monday night. Wrestling is set to begin at 6 p.m.
