Arkansas mother continues to grieve despite shooter’s guilty plea in her unborn child’s death

HELENA-WEST HELENA, Ark. — A grieving mother says justice feels hollow after the man who killed her unborn baby is sentenced.

Parneisha Slater believes that the guilty plea entered by 23-year-old Treyton Russell in Phillips County Criminal Court does not adequately compensate for the loss of her baby girl due to gun violence.

“No sentence can replace the void in my heart caused by the absence of a little girl,” Slater expressed.

In a FOX13 exclusive, Slater said she named the baby Paisley a week before Russell got into a verbal argument with her boyfriend, and Russell escalated the disagreement to gun violence.

“It happened so quick,” Slater said. “Shots just came flying in out of nowhere.”

Russell entered a guilty plea to second-degree murder and aggravated assault this week.

The shooting occurred April 8, 2023, in the small Arkansas town of Elaine.

The grieving mother told FOX13 that day marked not only the loss of her baby Paisley but it also ended her dream of becoming a mother to a daughter.

That day, bullet holes tore through the windows, a television and furniture.

Slater said her boyfriend lost an eye that day. She lost much more.

The mother said she’s been robbed of the joys of watching her baby grow into a toddler, then a little girl playing with her older brothers. “That would have been our first girl. And she was just taken from me — gone in the blink of an eye,” said Slater.

She told FOX13 that when she walked into court, she was expecting yet another continuance in the three-year journey to justice but Russell’s guilty plea surprised her.

Even after delivering a victim’s impact statement, Slater said justice in this case seemed hollow. “My baby would have been 3 years old. No sentence is bringing my baby back,” Slater said.

Russell was sentenced to 15 years for second-degree murder. Russell also received a 15-year sentence for aggravated assault. The sentences will run concurrently.
