Police searching for man accused of escaping custody

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A warrant has been issued for a man accused of escaping police custody early Sunday morning, the Memphis Police Department (MPD) said.

Police said officers and federal agents saw a “hand-to-hand exchange” in an Exxon parking lot on Getwell Road Saturday evening.

Officers detained Xavion Summers and two other people at the scene. According to MPD, officers found 510 grams of marijuana in a car along with a handgun.

MPD said Summers was being medically cleared at Regional One early Sunday when he pulled away from an officer and ran west on Madison Avenue.

He is charged with assault against a first responder, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a firearm, theft and escape.
