Man sues sheriff, DA for damages after charged in wife’s death

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A federal lawsuit was filed in a Mid-South murder mystery that lasted 15 years.

David Swift sued Dyer County Sheriff Jeff Box, District Attorney Danny Goodman, and several sheriff’s deputies, claiming malicious prosecution. The lawsuit is related to the disappearance and death of his wife, Karen Swift, in 2011.

Swift was charged with killing his wife in 2022. A jury acquitted him of most charges but deadlocked on voluntary manslaughter. Prosecutors tried to retry him, but the case was past the statute of limitations.

Swift now claims investigators mishandled the case, withheld evidence, and jailed him for 20 months for a crime he did not commit, and he’s asking for a federal trial to award him damages.

Sheriff Box told us that he has no comment, and we have reached out to Goodman for a comment, but have not heard back.
