PREP ROUNDUP: CHS baseball takes down Moore

Make it five in a row for Coffee County baseball.

Traveling to Lynchburg for a game against Moore County, a four-run top of the second inning broke a 1-1 tie for the Red Raiders on the way to a 7-2 victory Wednesday evening.

Landan Abellana knocked two home runs out of the park for two of Coffee County’s eight hits. Abellana’s first home run came in the top of the third inning and the second followed in the top of the seventh.

Austin Gipson, Elijah Vernon, Boone Floyd, Davis McKenzie, Preston Steele and Chase Leonard had one hit each.

Abellana came away with two of the team’s seven RBI. Gipson, Vernon, Floyd, McKenzie and Leonard each had one.

Matt Moore got it started on the mound, coming off with eight strikeouts, five hits and two runs after six innings. Kasen Shores followed for the bottom of the seventh, adding two strikeouts through the game’s conclusion.

Coffee County (5-3) heads to Tullahoma for a game against Upperman Thursday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.

High School Softball

Baylor 14, Coffee County 3

The Lady Raiders’ trip to Chattanooga to face Baylor ended in a five-inning road loss Wednesday, snapping a three-game winning streak.

Maggie Montgomery, Lily Norman, Haleigh Skipper, Kaylee Buckley and Madison Waller each had one hit for a team total of five.

Coffee County also had two RBI over the course of the game, with one each for Waller and Yeidy Cruz.

Cruz was the Lady Raiders’ starting pitcher, finishing with four strikeouts, five hits, five runs and three walks through four innings. Replacing her in the circle was Maddi Scott, who struck out two and gave up two hits, nine runs and two walks in the bottom of the fifth.

Coffee County (4-3) is back on the road to face Oakland at 6:30 p.m. Thursday night.

Middle School Softball

Community 16, Westwood 1

The Lady Rockets fell behind early on the way to a four-inning road loss Wednesday.

Elly Wild, Harper Hiles and Izzy Sartain each had one hit for three total. Sartain also had Westwood’s lone RBI in the top of the fourth inning.

Skyleigh Cooper got things going in the circle, allowing five hits and seven runs until coming out in the bottom of the second inning. McKenna Kehely took her place, striking out two and adding another four hits, nine runs and two walks through the game’s remainder.

Westwood (1-4) returns to action March 30 with a home game against Cannon County. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
