ONLY ON FOX13: Three men arrested after fight with MPD speak

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A celebratory night downtown turned into a fight and jail for three Memphis men.

“It was my birthday, so we were really just going to celebrate my birthday,” Jamal Hines told FOX13.

Him, 19-year-old Christopher Rucker, and 20-year-old Jermiah Rucker said it all began after 3 a.m. Saturday morning when they exchanged words with multiple Memphis Police officers.

“My brother was like, ‘I got him, I got him,’ coming to get me. Then the police were like, ‘Don’t touch him. ‘Don’t touch me,’ and then hit him. Next thing I know, it’s 4-5 of them on him,” Jermiah Rucker recalled.

It’s a fight that was captured on cell phone video. In it, you see all three of the men on the ground with officers on top of them.

“I just started feeling like licks in the back of my head, the back of my back, and my shoulder.”

Memphis police said one officer said he was detaining one man when another grabbed him, causing the officer to hit him. The video shows two were detained and eventually placed in patrol cars.

But Jermiah Rucker was dragged to a car, according to the video. “They did wrong. They did too much for no reason,” he told FOX13.

Their mother, Denise Rucker, said she was woken up that night to the video of this beating on social media. “He held the phone, and the video was quiet, and all I could hear was screaming in the background,” she told FOX13.

She said that’s when she knew a fun night out for her sons took a wrong turn.

“They could have lost their lives, and I thank God that they didn’t. Yeah, they get out of it with bruises, you know, scratches, whatever. But they didn’t lose their life,” she said.

All three are charged with resisting arrest and disorderly conduct charges. They’re released on $10,000 bonds.
