PREP ROUNDUP: CHS baseball bounces back, dominates Grundy

The Coffee County baseball team needed just four innings to return home from Coalmont with a win Thursday.

Taking on Grundy County, the Red Raiders opened the game with 13 runs in the top of the first inning on the way to a 25-3 thrashing of the Yellow Jackets.

Coffee County posted 22 RBI over the course of the game, led by Jaxon Pruitt with five. Elijah Vernon and Matt Moore followed with three each. Landan Abellana, Boone Floyd and Grayson Sadler each added two RBI. Ethan McKenzie, Davis Keith, Chase Leonard, Austin Gipson and Isaiah Deadman all had one RBI each.

Abellana came away with three of the team’s 11 hits. Pruitt and Davis McKenzie both connected on two hits each. Floyd, Vernon, Moore and Preston Steele each had one hit.

Xander Meeks held it down on the mound the entire game, striking out eight and ending Grundy County’s night with two hits, three runs and two walks.

Coffee County (8-6) returns home to host Tullahoma at 6 p.m. Friday evening. The Red Raiders will look to avenge a previous 3-2 loss to the rival Wildcats in Tullahoma on March 20.

High School Softball

Lady Raiders fall in Warrior Classic matchups

Coffee County softball resumed its Warrior Classic slate with a pair of matchups in Murfreesboro Thursday.

Taking on a pair of out-of-state teams, the Lady Raiders opened the day with a 6-0 loss to Bradley-Bourbonnais (Bradley, Ill.), before falling 11-4 in five innings to South Elgin (South Elgin, Ill.) later that afternoon.

Against Bradley-Bourbonnais, Coffee County had one hit each from Maddi Scott and Madison Waller for a team total of two.

Yeidy Cruz got it started in the circle, coming out after four innings with four strikeouts, four hits, five runs and five walks. Haleigh Skipper closed it out from there, adding two strikeouts, three hits and one run over the remaining three innings.

In their second game against South Elgin, Cara Newlin came away with three of the Lady Raiders’ six hits. Waller, Ella Arnold and Raelyn Wainwright each had one hit.

Waller picked up two of the team’s three RBI, with the remaining one credited to Newlin.

Lily Norman pitched a complete game, striking out five and giving up 13 hits, 11 runs and two walks over the course of the game.

Coffee County (5-7) returns to Murfreesboro to resume Warrior Classic play against Kankakee Valley (Wheatfield Township, Ind.) Friday morning.  First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.

Middle School Baseball

Eagleville 7, Westwood 1

The Rockets dropped their fourth straight game in a road loss Thursday.

Westwood finished with five hits, including one each for Brock Christian, Casen Francisco, Jackson Vernon, Will Levengood and Max Stewart. Francisco had the team’s only RBI.

CJ Chavis Jr. pitched the first three innings, coming off with four strikeouts, four hits, seven runs and six walks. Vernon followed for the remaining three innings, adding one strikeout, one hit and two walks through the game’s remainder.

Westwood (7-6) will look to get back on track with a home game against Community Monday. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
