Firefighters begin prescribed burn northeast of Winnett

LEWISTOWN, Mont. — Firefighters from the U.S. Wildland Fire Service started a controlled burn about 15 miles northeast of Winnett in the Musselshell River Breaks, according to a press release.

The Bureau of Land Management planned the burn for a 2,386-acre area called Tin Can Hill Unit B. It’s covered in ponderosa pine and grassland and hasn’t been burned since 2012.

The goal is to keep the pine stands healthy while clearing out extra vegetation that could feed future wildfires.

Crews may keep lighting fires through Sunday, March 29. Smoke could hang around for up to a week and might be visible from nearby roads and towns.

Firefighters will monitor the area until the burn is completely out.
