Father speaks on importance of second chances through Memphis’ B.R.I.D.G.E. program
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — April is National Second Chance Month.
In its honor, FOX13 is highlighting B.R.I.D.G.E. (Building Renewed Independence. Dignity, Growth, and Empowerment). It’s a year-round program designed to give formerly imprisoned people a second chance.
Through B.R.I.D.G.E., the city helps people who have been released from prison find work by pairing them with companies that are willing to give them another chance at life.
Here’s how it works: A city employee sits down with the participant to go over their record and see what can be expunged. The employee will help them get classes on fostering stability, growth and community empowerment and connect them with potential employers.
So far this year, the program has helped over 500 people — including a father of three who was recently released after serving eight years in prison.
Jeremy Statts now works as a fork lift driver, and his employers told FOX13 they couldn’t be happier with him.
“I done went through it,” he said. “I’ve been through hard times and this right here let me know that even though it’s hard on me, I still keep moving forward. I don’t let nothing stop me.”
The program also helps people get their license reinstated.
