PREP ROUNDUP: CHS, Westwood baseball fall short in Tuesday matchups

For the second time in as many days, the Coffee County baseball team faced off against Columbia Central Tuesday evening.

Taking on the Lions at home this time around, the Red Raiders once again fell 4-2 to their Class 4A District 9 foe to fall to 7-6 overall and 0-2 in district play.

Coffee County finished the game with five hits, led by Davis McKenzie with two. Preston Steele, Elijah Vernon and Grayson Sadler all had one hit each.

McKenzie and Landan Abellana each had one RBI for a team total of two.

Isaiah Deadman pitched the first six innings, coming off with five strikeouts, four hits, three runs and four walks. Kasen Shores followed for the seventh inning, adding one strikeout, three hits and one run in this span.

Coffee County travels to Coalmont to take on Grundy County Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Middle School Baseball

Winchester Christian Academy 8, Westwood 5

The Rockets were unable to avenge Monday’s road loss to Winchester Christian Academy in their home rematch Tuesday.

Westwood posted 11 hits over the course of the game, with Owen Holder taking the top spot with three. Brock Christian and CJ Chavis Jr. followed with two each. Casen Francisco, Luke Christian, Griffyn Woods and Will Levengood each had one hit.

The team had five RBI, with one each for Francisco, Chavis Jr., Woods, Levengood and Brock Christian.

Brock Christian got it started on the mound, striking out five and holding Winchester Christian Academy to one hit, two runs and six walks until coming off in the top of the fourth inning. Levengood took his place, adding one strikeout, three hits, six runs and six walks until he was replaced in the top of the seventh inning. Woods went on to close it out, earning a strikeout to wrap up the inning.

Westwood (7-5) heads to Eagleville for a 5 p.m. game Thursday.

High School Baseball

Columbia 4, Coffee County 2

After taking a 2-1 lead over Columbia in the top of the second inning, the Red Raiders gave up three runs in the bottom of the third on the way to a road loss against the Lions Monday evening.

Coffee County finished with seven hits, led by Jaxon Pruitt with two. Steele, McKenzie, Abellana, Sadler and Carter Bell all had one hit each.

Pruitt came away with both of the team’s two RBI.

Boone Floyd got it started on the mound, coming off with two strikeouts, four hits, four runs and two walks after three innings. Austin Gipson went on to close it out, adding three strikeouts, one hit and one walk.

High School Softball

Warren Township (Ill.) 8, Coffee County 0

The Lady Raiders were held scoreless through four-and-a-half innings in their Warrior Classic opener at Riverdale High School Monday night.

Maddi Scott was credited with two of Coffee County’s four hits. Taylor McBride and Yeidy Cruz each had one hit.

Scott took the loss in the circle, striking out three and giving up seven hits, eight runs and three walks over the course of the game.

Middle School Baseball

Winchester Christian Academy 7, Westwood 3

The Rockets suffered their second straight road loss Monday.

The team finished the game with the seven hits, including one each for Woods, Chavis Jr., Francisco, Levengood, Brady Christian, Luke Christian and Logan McKenzie.

Westwood also had three RBI, with one each for Chavis Jr., McKenzie and Levengood.

Luke Christian was the Rockets’ starting pitcher, finishing with four strikeouts, two hits, one run and three walks until coming off in the bottom of the sixth inning. Max Stewart took his place and added one strikeout, two hits, six runs and four walks through the inning’s remainder.
