Coffee County Sheriff’s Department warns of gift card scam

S

Coffee County Sheriff Department recently cautioned on social media that scammers are posing as a fraudulent company seeking gift cards.

In a letter received by a local resident, a nonexistent “Walmart Service Management Group” asked the recipient to help evaluate Walmart cashiers by purchasing $2,570 in gift cards using funds from a worthless cashier’s check included.

Offered a $100 bonus for participating, the letter recipient is asked by the scam to “be discreet” and not inform the Walmart staff of the “survey.” The letter then asks the recipient to text photos of the cards with the PIN numbers visible.

Coffee County Sheriff’s Department strongly cautions that the letter is a scam. The company does not exist and by purchasing the gift cards and sending the scammers PIN numbers, unwitting residents will lose the money on the card.

Anyone receiving one of these letters is asked to notify your local law enforcement agency.
