Tyre Nichols honored on third anniversary of his death in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – On January 7, 2023, Tyre Nichols was beaten by five Memphis Police Officers after he ran from a traffic stop that has still never been fully explained.

Nichols died from his injuries three days later.

What followed was a firestorm of outrage, grief and demands for change. Calls for police reform, criminal cases and lawsuits that are still playing out today.

On Wednesday night, family, friends and community members returned to the very spot where it happened to honor a man who became a symbol nationwide, even though all he was trying to do was make it home to his mother.

After three years, the stretch of Castlegate Lane where Nichols was beaten remains a place of pain, reflection and unanswered questions.

Family members said they came together not to relive the tragedy, but to honor who Tyre Nichols was and the life he lived.

Candles and quiet reflection filled Castlegate Lane as the community gathered around the exact spot where Nichols was beaten, a place that has since become a powerful symbol of grief, loss and an ongoing fight for justice.

Organizers said the vigil was about remembering Tyre Nichols not as a headline or a case, but as a son, a brother and a cherished presence in his community.

“It got real quiet for a little while, and I thought that people forgot about him. I thought that people just went on about their lives,” said Keyana Dixon, Tyre Nichols’ sister. “And I really, really wanted today to be about remembering him, but also coming together as a community and letting everyone know that we have not forgot about him. And we are still seeking justice.”
