Memphis gynecologist found guilty on 40 counts, six with no decision

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After days of deliberation, a jury found a Memphis gynecologist guilty of dozens of counts in his federal trial Wednesday, including charges for medical device violations and health care fraud.

The jury found Dr. Sanjeev Kumar guilty on 40 federal charges, with the judge declaring a mistrial on the remaining six charges where jurors could not agree. The guilty verdicts were:

  • 16 counts of adulteration of a single-use device;
  • 16 counts of misbranding of the reprocessing of a single-use device;
  • 2 counts of adulteration of a hysteroscope clear for reprocessing;
  • 6 counts of healthcare fraud.

Kumar will be sentenced on April 9, 2026.

Hours after the partial verdict Wednesday, Kumar and his defense team spoke to FOX13 and said their fight was far from over. Asked if he had a message for his patients, he said, “I could say a lot. But I want them to know I always did my very best to serve them.”

Kumar said he was still processing the verdicts. “Obviously feel very disappointed, but at the same time, respect the process and firmly believe that I served every patient like a family member,” he said.

Prosecutors asked the judge to take Kumar into custody immediately, arguing he posed a flight risk. But the judge denied that request, allowing him to remain free on bond.

“As far as science is concerned, we are confident we are on the right side of the scientific facts,” Kumar said. “We intend to appeal and try to get justice.”

His attorney, Ronald Chapman, called the case hard-fought but added that the defense believes the government presented the evidence in a misleading way. “We didn’t get exactly what we wanted here,” he said.

The prosecution declined FOX13’s request for an interview.
