Westwood hoops sweeps Lewisburg

Westwood Middle School’s basketball teams returned from Thanksgiving break with a pair of wins Wednesday night.

Welcoming Lewisburg for a district doubleheader, both the boys’ and girls’ teams came out on top in each respective matchup, with the Lady Rockets winning 45-18 and the Rockets following up with a 58-43 victory in the nightcap.

In the girls’ game, Westwood trailed early on but quickly took control to finish the first quarter up 11-5.

The Lady Rockets expanded their lead to 23-11 by halftime and continued to push ahead as the second half got under way. Up 38-14 by the third quarter’s close, Westwood allowed just four more Lewisburg points in the fourth quarter to finish ahead by 27.

Makenzie Meacham led the Lady Rocket offense with 12 points. Bella Hastings followed with nine points. Paisley Prater and Adley Selvog both added seven points each. Lyza Cashion drained five points. Ashlyn Allen netted a single tre for three points. Norah Grant had a single basket for two points.

A close start to the boys’ game followed, with Lewisburg taking a 12-7 lead at the end of the first quarter after trailing Westwood early.

The Rockets quickly tightened it as the second quarter got under way, before taking a 14-12 lead on a 3-pointer from Brock Christian. Westwood continued to add some space from there and went into halftime up 23-15.

The Westwood lead grew into the double digits as the second half played out. Ahead 38-26 at the end of the third quarter, the Rockets continued to hold off Lewisburg on the way to finishing the game up by 15.

Luke Christian led the way with 17 points. Brock Christian followed with 14 points, finishing just ahead of Hayes Shemwell with 13 points. Alijah Cuff added eight points. Abe Norman came away with four points. Sterling Hackett had a single bucket for two points.

Westwood returns to action next week with a road trip to Franklin North on Wednesday. Tip-off of the girls’ game is set for 6 p.m.
