Manchester City Schools’ Dr. Mick Shuran was recently named one of the Tennessee Department of Education 2024-25 Tennessee Supervisors of the Year.
The finalists represent each of the state’s Center of Regional Excellence (CORE) regions, with three finalists in each Grand Division: West, Middle, and East.
“We are incredibly proud of Dr. Shuran and the work that he’s been able to do,” MCS Director of School Dr. Joey Vaughn said at the time of his nomination. “(This) speaks volumes about the work that he’s been able to do.”
Vaughn commended Shuran for his efforts to build a community among educators within and outside the district.
“I’ve watched him continue to grow and to lead,” Vaughn said. “One of the things I’m most proud of for Dr. Shuran is that he’s working with supervisors throughout our region. We are in a situation in education where collaboration is key and he has encouraged other districts to work together.”
Shuran is the MCS Director of Federal Programs and Instruction. He oversees the instructional leadership team that looks at data and works with teachers and administrators to help better education in the classroom.
Shuran works to facilitate federal Title program money to implement additional programs at the schools. That could include intervention teachers, professional learning and English Language Learners programs.
As a former school principal, Shuran has a heart for the schools. He works to be in classrooms and hallways as much as possible.
“The kids are the most important; we want to make sure they get what they need,” Shuran said. “But at the same time if a teacher doesn’t have the resources or the support or the guidance or professional learning, then it’s going to be difficult on them. It’s tough these days being a teacher. It seems there’s a constant attack on the education profession.”
Shuran’s award was announced at the annual Excellence in Education celebration, the Tennessee Department of Education along with the 2024-25 Principal of the Year and two 2024-25 Recognizing Inspiring School Employees (RISE) state finalists.
“I am thrilled to honor these remarkable school leaders with the 2024-25 Principal and Supervisor of the Year awards,” said Commissioner Lizzette Reynolds. “These individuals have played key roles in the success of their teachers and students, and I am proud to have them representing Tennessee.”
“Congratulations to each of the Tennessee Supervisor of the Year Finalists! This distinction commends your dedication and unwavering pursuit of educational excellence,” said Arlette Robinson, 2023-24 Tennessee Supervisor of the Year. “As you are recognized for your leadership, take this moment to showcase your great work and passion for quality education, and shine. May you be honored and celebrated for your unique gifts, talents, resources, and support you bring to your district and community.”
