Raiders falter at Lewisburg

On Tuesday night, the Coffee Middle Red Raiders lost 40-12 in a road contest to the Lewisburg Tigers.
It didn’t take long for the Tigers to strike first after receiving the opening kickoff, throwing a 71 yard pass for a touchdown just 18 seconds into the game to take a 7-0 lead.
The Red Raiders couldn’t get going on their first drive, and they were forced to punt from their own 36 yard line.
Lewisburg continued to throw the ball well on their next drive, scoring another passing touchdown to add to their lead with 3:42 left in the first quarter. Coffee County would block the PAT attempt, but Lewisburg still led 13-0.
Coffee County would show some life on their next drive, running the ball well behind the strength of eighth grader Isaac Barnes.
As the first quarter flipped over to the second quarter, the Red Raiders made it all the way down to the Lewisburg 3 yard line, but they could not punch it through and would turn the ball over on downs.
Coffee County would put some defensive pressure on the Tigers, who were backed up against their own end zone, but the Tigers again went to their air attack, launching a 97 yard touchdown bomb. Lewisburg would fail a two point conversion, but still lead 19-0
The Red Raiders would punt on their next offensive possession, and Lewisburg would go on to score on their next drive with a rushing touchdown. This time, the Tigers completed a two point conversion to take a 27-0 lead that they would keep all the way to halftime.
Coffee County would go on their longest drive of the game to start the third quarter, burning off over six minutes of game clock before scoring their first touchdown of the night. Keyton Childress would be the one to score, catching a pass on a trick play to put the Red Raiders on the scoreboard. Coffee County would go for a two point attempt, but fail to convert, making the score 27-6.
Lewisburg would score on their first drive of the fourth quarter, piling up a 33-6 advantage.
Coffee County would score another touchdown with 6:45 remaining in the game on a pass to Brody Crase to make the score 33-12.
The Tigers would score again and make the PAT to go up 40-12 with 3:12 remaining, and the score would stay that way until the end of the game.
The loss puts the Red Raiders at 1-3 for the season.
Coffee County will be at home for their next contest on Tuesday, Sept. 3 against North Middle, where the Red Raiders will also celebrate homecoming and eighth grade night.
