Show scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 10

Country singer Deana Carter will be bringing some 1990s Country hits with her “An Evening with Deana Carter” acoustic show scheduled for 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 10 at McMinnville’s Park Theater.

A Nashville native, Carter burst onto the music scene with her 1995 debut album “Did I Shave My Legs for his?” which went 5X Platinum. She is known for hits like “Strawberry Wine,” “We Danced Anyway” and “How do I get there.”

Now nearly 30 years later, Carter is still out on the road, performing about 100 dates a year, bringing her music to multiple generations of fans.

“It is going to be an acoustic show, sort of a storyteller’s type show for us,” Carter said. “You will get to hear stories and a little bit more of an intimate situation where I get to talk about songs and really engage with the audience and encourage them to participate and ask questions.”

Carter will be playing acoustic guitar during the show, and she will be joined by her husband, Jim McPhail on electric guitar.

Carter said she agrees there is a resurgence of popularity in 1990s country music these days.

“I feel like those kids that were raised on it, maybe their parents were in their 30s when my records came out back then, so they were raised on it and now they’re having kids of their own and they are raising their kids on it because that’s what they listened to growing up,” she said. “So it is generational and we see that in our shows.”

The daughter of musician Fred Carter Jr., Carter said her early musical influences included a lot of musical movies and television, like the 1978 film “Grease”.

“That was an era that was hyper focused on music being a central part of entertainment,” Carter said.

By the time she was in high school, her favorite bands included rock acts like Boston and Journey.

While she knew she wanted to perform, Carter said she always figured it would be more in musical tele shows and movies.

“I didn’t have a genre really and I just thought that music and performing would be my deal. Writing my songs,” she said.

Carter said she never gets tired of singing songs from throughout her career, and she is hoping to be able to continue on doing just that for some time to come.

“I am not a spring chicken, but I am not old yet and I just want to make the most of the days I have,” she said. “Now I can do that with a little more perspective, a lot of gratitude. I am more relaxed about it but I don’t want it to go away. I know someday it probably will or wane or whatever, but I am not ready, I want to keep rocking.”
