The Coffee County Red Raiders did not play Friday, Oct. 6. on bye week for fall break. The Raiders sit at a 1-6 record this season.
Aug. 18 – Franklin Co.
On Friday, Aug. 18, the Raiders claimed their first and only win of the season 10-7.
The Raiders started out receiving but failed to push past the 50. While Franklin Co. held possession, they had two incomplete passes and some flags drug Franklin back. Following was a run with no gain.
Franklin Co. then opted for a punt, but the snap flew over the head of Franklin County’s kicker giving the Raiders the ball at Franklin’s 16.
Coffee immediately managed to reach the 4 before a series of unfortunate events played out. By the end of the Coffee’s offensive stretch, Manny Gonzales came to kick for a field goal, scoring with 7:27 left in the first quarter.
Neither team managed to impact the scoreboard for the rest of the half. At halftime, Coffee stayed on top 3-0.
In the third quarter following, Caiden Martin returned a punt to the 15. Coffee pushed forward and Jayden Carter scored a 3 yard touchdown. These points allowed the Raiders to push the score 10-0.
In the early fourth, Franklin Co.’s Quarterback made several game changing connections. He started with two passes each stretching 14-15 yards. Franklin County made it into the red zone and scored shortly after.
The Raiders won their season opener 10-7.
Aug. 25 – Coffee Pot
In the annual Coffee Pot game, Coffee lost 16-0.
The Raiders started out receiving, only making it a few yards before opting to punt. This trend continued for both teams until the Wildcats kicked a field goal making the score 3-0 with 1:20 left in the first quarter.
Coffee then returned to offense and punted again. Tullahoma added another successful field goal pushing the lead to 6-0. The Raiders continued through another unsuccessful drive followed by a defining moment in the game.
Tullahoma returned a Coffee County punt to Coffee’s eight yard line. Two plays later, Tullahoma scored a passing touchdown pushing the score 13-0.
Coffee’s offense continued to struggle through halftime. In the Raider’s first drive of the second half, the Wildcats stole an interception. This interception resulted in a third field goal with 7:24 left in the third quarter.
These were the final points of the game. In the remaining time, the Wildcats continued to give the Red Raiders offense fits forcing multiple interceptions.
While there were several hopeful moments for the Raiders and fans, no success came into fruition.
Sept. 1 – Shelbyville
At the start of Labor Day weekend, the Coffee County Red Raiders visited Shelbyville and fell to 1-2 on their season thanks to a 38-17 loss against the Golden Eagles.
John Massengill stepped up as starting quarterback with Cole Pippenger injured and out for the remainder of the season with a shoulder injury. In the game, Massengill went 8-of-16 for 85 yards.
In total, Coffee managed 192 offensive yards.
Special team mistakes for Shelbyville gave Coffee County their best opportunities to close the gap, but the Red Raiders could only manage to get within four points when Jayden Carter scored on a short rush.
It was all Shelbyville from that point, as the Golden Eagles would score 17 unanswered to close the game.
Sept. 8 – Siegel
The Raiders traveled to Siegel on Friday, September 8. In this match-up, the Raiders fell 21-0 losing the game without a single score.
Just because they ultimately failed to score doesn’t mean the Raiders didn’t come dangerously close. Siegel attempted a fake punt but failed to get the yardage needed. Coffee took over at Siegel’s 40, but only moved about three yards before a loss on a bad snap for an attempted punt.
The bad snap allowed Siegel to start their drive at Coffee’s 44 yard line. By the end of the drive, Siegel scored their first touchdown of the game at 5:34.
Following kickoff, Coffee stayed in possession throughout the rest of the first quarter into the second to no avail. Siegel then started another drive capped with a touchdown with 8:13 left in the first half.
At halftime, the score sat at 14-0. At the beginning of the second half, a Coffee fumble was recovered by Siegel. Just plays later, Siegel scored on a pass with 6:47 in the third.
In the fourth, Coffee started out with a short drive that came to a halting stop when Siegel intercepted John Massengill’s pass. Neither team scored in the final quarter and Coffee didn’t reach the red zone once in the entire game– much less the endzone.
Sept. 15 – Page
For the third time in the season the Red Raiders were shut out. Coffee fell to Page 28-0 on Friday, Sept. 15. The Raiders started receiving but ended the drive with Manny Gonzales punting.
Page followed with a long drive capped with a touchdown with 5:45 on the clock. After another unsuccessful Coffee drive, Page managed a 74-yard passing touchdown on the second play of their next possession. By the second quarter, Page was up 14-0.
Coffee’s offensive drive ran through the first to the second but remained unfruitful. During the next Page drive, Tyler Martin intercepted the ball in the endzone, but the score remained unchanged. Page still led 14-0 at the half.
Page tacked on another touchdown with 5:45 left on the clock in the third quarter. Shortly after they found the endzone again to finalize the score 28-0. Neither team scored in the fourth.
Sept. 22 – Riverdale
The Raiders celebrated their homecoming on Sept. 22, but couldn’t bring home a win. Coffee fell to perennial powerhouse Riverdale 49-0.
Riverdale scored in the first drive of the game with 9:33 left on the clock before handing the ball to Coffee. The Raiders failed to gain traction on offense; but when Riverdale took over again, they scored again near the end of the first quarter 14-0.
It appeared the quarter was going to finish 14-0 in favor of the Warriors from Riverdale.
At the end of the first, a replay allowed a third touchdown as the first quarter came to a close. The first quarter ended 21-0. By halftime, Riverdale doubled their score to 42-0.
During halftime, CCCHS honored student government and the Homecoming Court. Allie Sullivan and Caden Davis were crowned Homecoming King and Queen while Bethany Lambert was named Football Queen.
A continuous clock ran through the second half. Riverdale only scored once more pushing the win to be 49-0, ending the game.
Sept. 29 – Rockvale
While still suffering a loss, the Red Raiders still managed a positive from their defeat Friday night: an end to their shutout streak. Coffee County Football fell 31-7 to Rockvale on Friday, Sept. 29.
In the first quarter, the Raiders made it all the way to Rockvale’s five-yard line. A fumble stalled the drive and resulted in an attempted field goal. The kick was blocked and Rockvale returned it for a touchdown with 5:52 left in the first.
Following in the second quarter, Xavier Randolph returned the favor on special teams when he blocked a Rockvale punt and continued all the way to Rockvale’s 11 yard line. Then, another costly fumble allowed Rockvale to grab the ball and score their second touchdown of the game.
Rockvale then scored their only offensive touchdown of the first half, a testament to how hard the Red Raider defense fought all night. At halftime, the Raiders were down 21-0. Rockvale continued its dominance into the second half of play, and it looked like another shutout for Coffee County– until with only 2:37 left on the clock. Caiden Martin broke the Raider’s shutout streak with a touchdown from seven yards out.
