City Finance Committee pushes bi-weekly pay to BOMA

The City of Manchester has three separate pay schedules for its employees. Most of the departments are paid bi-weekly, yet two departments get a check each Friday, while the Aldermen are paid monthly.
A move to streamline payroll so that all employees will start receiving bi-weekly paychecks passed the Finance Committee during a special call Finance Committee meeting on Jan. 11.
The committee felt that the uniformity would make better sense, yet representatives from the two departments, when asked, said they felt that some of their employees would be hard hit by the shift.
Some employees live from paycheck to paycheck, and have specific bills being pulled from each check.
The committee suggested that the change be made in June.
The committee also accepted Director of Finance Lisa Myers suggestion that the shift be phased in by the first two pay weeks lasting a week and a half then moving to the fortnight.
“The employees are going to still get paid the same amount. It has nothing to do with the amount they get paid,” she said. “We can look at something that will ease into the two-week pay period.”
About 50 employees will be affected by the change.
Alderman Donny Parsley confirmed that the direct deposits and deductions would be readjusted as needed.
The recommendation passed with a unanimous vote.
