City adjusts beer sale hours

An ordinance to adjust the sale hours passed on its second reading during the Aug. 6 meeting of the Manchester Board of Mayor and Aldermen.

The ordinance clarifies the wording of the city code by amending the language to restrict beer sales, give away or dispensing by those with a beer permit to the hours of 8 a.m.-3 a.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday to 3 a.m. Monday.

The ordinance amends the former code to make the hours of beer sales to fall in line with other alcoholic beverage sales.

Flag lots addressed

The first reading of an ordinance cleaning up the language of a city zoning codes passed its first reading during the meeting.

The ordinance aims to address a discrepancy in the absolute minimum lot size and will limit flag lots by changing the minimum width of a property.

Director of Codes Brittany Fiske said recent updates to the codes allow for 5,000 square foot lots in R-4 high density residential areas, so this section of the code would need to be amended to match the language of the other.

Currently, the 30 minimum lot width allows for a flag lot, a flagpole shaped lot with narrow strip of land leading to a larger portion of land located to the rear of an adjacent lot.

“The Planning Commission stated some concern with the amount of flag-shaped lots that they were receiving,” Fiske said. “We’re hoping (this change) will prevent some of those flag-shaped lots and maybe preserve some of the larger lots in town.”

The first reading passed 4-1 with Alderman Julie Anderson voting no and Alderman Donny Parsley absent.
