Rockets cruise past Cascade

The Westwood Rockets celebrated Eighth Grade Night and Homecoming with a 34-0 shutout of the Cascade Champions on Wednesday evening at Dyer-Bouldin Field.

Eighth Grade Night ceremonies took place before the start of the game and 13 of Westwood’s players were honored.

The Rockets would receive the game’s opening kickoff, but couldn’t get going on their first drive, stalling out on their own 47 before being forced to punt. It would turn out to be Westwood’s only scoreless drive of the game until the end of the fourth quarter.

Westwood’s defense looked pretty solid in their first stand against the Champion offense, forcing a punt from Cascade’s own 30-yard line.

It wouldn’t take long for Westwood to score on their next possession, as Kam Cooley broke free on the first play of the drive for a rushing touchdown. The Rockets would fail the two point conversion, but still take a 6-0 lead midway through the opening quarter.

Cascade’s offense would again be forced to punt, and Westwood scored again on their next turn with the ball with a big catch in the endzone from Cason Franciso to give the Rockets a 12-0 lead to end the first quarter.

The next offensive possession for the Champions would be one of their longest of the night, taking up almost seven minutes of game clock in the second quarter. Cascade would reach the Westwood 16, but turn the ball over on downs.

Westwood wasn’t deterred by the little time remaining on the clock, reaching the end zone with 27 seconds left on a passing play to Brady Clem. It would be Hayes Shemwell’s second passing touchdown of the night and Westwood converted a two point try to take a 20-0 lead, which they took to the halftime break.

At halftime, members of the homecoming court were recognized with Brady Clem being crowned Homecoming King and Kate Kennedy being crowned Homecoming Queen.

Cascade received the ball at the beginning of the second half, but an interception by Luke Christian gave Westwood the ball in Champion territory on the 40-yard line.

Kam Cooley would again answer the call for Westwood on the ground, scampering 40 yards for his second touchdown of the night, and Westwood completed another two-point conversion after the score to extend the lead to 28-0.

The Rockets would score once more in the third quarter on a reception by Kaden Campbell, and Westwood rode a 34-0 lead all the way through to the end of the game with the help of a running clock.

Westwood improved to 4-2 on the season with their second shutout win of the year and they will travel to Cannon County for their regular season finale on Thursday, Sept. 19.
