High School Volleyball: Lady Raiders sweep Grundy in season opener

S

The Lady Raiders began the Jon Spears Era with a relatively easy road win on Monday night, dispatching Grundy County in three straight sets.

Coffee County mounted an early lead in the first set and went on to win 25-16, and while the second set was closer at the start, it still ended in an identical 25-16 score.

The Lady Raiders ran away with the third set, completing the sweep with a 25-11 result.

“It feels great to get that win,” first-year head coach Jon Spears said after the win. “We had scrimmaged them (Grundy) twice in the preseason and they had our number then, so to come out and win 3-0 is huge. We have a good squad and we played really well tonight.”

Coach Spears believes that the win over the Yellow Jackets should be used as an example for how his team should approach each game for the remainder of the season.

“I’m hoping we can take momentum from tonight and go on to win our district,” he said. “We just have to continue playing together like we did tonight. There was a lot of communication, everybody got some good hits and that’s what it’s going to take moving forward.”

Junior Danni Hillis led the way for Coffee County with five kills and four aces, while four other Lady Raiders registered four kills; Allysa Goon, Carrington Saner, Hayleigh Harris and Cailey Sturgill.

The freshmen and JV squads picked up a pair of 2-0 wins.

The Lady Raiders will travel to Shelbyville for their first match in district play on Tuesday, Aug. 19 with varsity action set to start at 6 p.m.
