Gillespie Concrete builds on a solid foundation
Matthew Burnette, Staff Writer
Gillespie Concrete Construction was built on a solid foundation of decades of generational experience in the concrete and construction industry.
Daniel Gillespie operates the business with his wife Kim out of Manchester but will travel as far as an hour and a half to a job.
Daniel first got his start in the business working 15 years for his father Dean at Bridge Builders Inc. Dean started the business in 1963 and took part in the construction of many of the road and interstates that are still in use today, though the Gillespie family has even deeper ties in the concrete industry dating back to the 1920s.
Gillespie Concrete Construction offers a variety of concrete services in both the commercial and residential sectors.
They specialize in driveways, patios, retaining walls and land services. Kim Gillespie says that her husband loves to see a project from start to finish and has a keen eye for design.
“If you look at a lot of our work, we do a lot more design than just your standard concrete,” she explained. “We do a lot od decorative lines and stuff like that just to make us stand out form just like your typical concrete. We’ll do more than just a straight driveway with straight-cut lines just to give the homeowner a little something extra to be proud of.”
Kim is referred to as the VP of Operations and Estimating by her husband. With years of experience in HR, she handles more of the day-to-day operations of the business so her husband can focus more of the work in the field.
“We really are like best friends, and I think that we compliment each other,” Kim noted. “My husband is more creative and free-spirited whereas I’m more focused on the actual business aspect of things. I think I just help keep him grounded and focused on the long-term and how we want to grow the business, and he’s just really good at getting out there and selling the business to people.”
Gillespie Concrete Construction was originally started in McMinnville where Daniel is from but moved operations to Manchester a couple of years ago. Kim, a Coffee County native who spent most of her life in Manchester and Tullahoma, says she enjoys working from her hometown.
“It’s just awesome to be able to serve the community that I’m from.”
