Police investigate multiple shootings over first weekend of new year
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The first weekend of the new year shows signs of an old problem in Memphis: gun violence.
The Memphis Police Department (MPD) has multiple investigations surrounding shootings that were launched between Friday and Sunday.
“It’s a shame, because people are losing,” said Frayser resident James Jones. “People lose their family members in a new year.”
The new year is off to a deadly start in this apartment complex in Frayser. Early Sunday morning, shots rang out here in the 2500 block of Woodcliff Drive. MPD reported officers found a man in critical condition. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. No suspect information has been released at this time.
It’s not the only gun violence reported in the first weekend of 2026.
At a quarter to ten Saturday night, MPD dispatched officers to a shooting call in the 600 block of Whiteside Cove in Whitehaven…. And initially, what happened was not evident when they got here…
MPD reported that when officers arrived on this scene, they were not able to locate a victim in that shooting call. But later, a male showed up at a hospital in critical condition.
Investigators released a suspect vehicle description that’s not very specific. They report it was a black car that was seen in the Whitehaven shooting.
But continued gun violence into the new year, on the heels of a reported drop in violent crime and homicides in Memphis in 2025, has at least one Memphian facing a grim reality.
“You would think bringing in a new year, a new life, a new relief. You know, I’m saying new blessings,” Jones said. “At the same time, you still got other people that don’t think that way.”
