Local swimmers finish strong at last home meet

The Coffee County and Westwood swim teams were back in their home pool last Friday, welcoming Columbia for a meet at the Manchester Recreation Complex.

Both teams produced first-place finishes over the course of the evening across both individual and relay events.

Top finishes for Coffee County included the boys’ 200-yard medley relay team of Ethan Hayes, Aidan Hayes, Raiden Hiles and Corban Alvarado, who finished in first place with a finals time of 2:17.02. Jaci Howlett added a first-place finish in the girls’ 200-yard individual medley at a time of 2:30.41. Howlett went on to take first place in the girls’ 100-yard butterfly, posting a finals time of 1:11.49. Alvarado followed in the boys’ 100-yard butterfly, finishing at a time of 1:17.06.

Alvarado added another first-place finish for Coffee County in the boys’ 100-yard freestyle, finishing at the 1:02.87 mark. The Red Raiders earned another first-place relay finish not long after in the boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay, with the team of Aidan Hayes, Andy Garrison, Avery Moore and Hiles taking the top spot with a finals time of 1:59.25. Avory Gilday added another first-place spot for Coffee County in the next event, posting the top finish in the girls’ 100-yard backstroke at a time of 1:16.75.

Westwood’s Austin Gilday gave the Rockets a first-place finish on the night, taking the boys’ 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:20.79.

Up next for qualifying Coffee County and Westwood swimmers are the MTHSSA Regional Meets at the Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville. The high school meet will be held next Friday, Jan. 23. Qualifying swimmers will move on to the Tennessee High School State Meet, which be held Feb. 6 and 7 at the Centennial Sportsplex. The middle school meet will be held on Saturday, Jan. 24 in a prelim/finals meet.

Qualifying swimmers from Coffee County Central High School include Howlett, Hiles, Alvarado, Aidan Hayes, Avory Gilday, Alex Dolack, Jack Stowe, Alyssa Yates and Addison Yates.

At the middle school level, qualifying swimmers from Coffee County Middle School include Audrey Yates, Isaac Moore and Jackson Henley. Qualifying swimmers from Westwood include Austin Gilday, Eli Shelton, Kellen Watts, Hallie Hunt and Harper Hiles.
