CHS softball goes 1-2 at CCS Invitational

The Coffee County softball team spent the weekend in Chattanooga for two days of tournament play Friday and Saturday.

Competing in the CCS Invitational, the Lady Raiders opened the tournament with a 9-4 loss to Boyd-Buchanan Friday before falling 8-1 to Huntsville in their Saturday morning game. Coffee County bounced back in its second game of day Saturday, blanking Wartburg Central 10-0.

In Friday’s game against Boyd-Buchanan, Yeidy Cruz and Samantha Johnson led the effort at the plate with two hits each. Ella Arnold added one hit for a team total of five.

Johnson had both of Coffee County’s two RBI.

Cruz got it started in the circle, finishing with four strikeouts, three hits, one run and two walks through the first four innings. Kaylee Buckley took her place and added eight hits, eight runs and one walk over the final two innings of the six-inning game.

Against Huntsville, the Lady Raiders came away with one hit each from Arnold, Cara Newlin and Raelyn Wainwright for a total of three over the course of the game.

Maggie Montgomery was credited with Coffee County’s lone RBI.

Maddi Scott pitched the first three innings, coming out with seven hits, seven runs and two walks. Cruz followed in the bottom of the fourth, striking out two and allowing one more hit and one more run before the game ended following the top of the fifth inning.

The Lady Raiders went on to post seven hits in their win over Wartburg Central, led by Wainwright and Lily Norman with two each. Newlin, Bailey Hale and Adalyn Wild each had one hit.

Norman posted four of the team’s seven RBI, with one each for Wainwright, Hale and Briley Jernigan.

Norman went the distance in the circle, striking out seven and holding Wartburg Central to two hits and two walks across all five innings.

Coffee County (2-2) returns to action with a road matchup against Siegel Tuesday.
