Troubled Memphis motel to remain closed ahead of trial
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A problem property in Memphis must stay closed for at least a few more weeks.
“If you’re not able to protect patrons and the public, you can’t use the area as a defense,” said Judge Patrick Dandridge of Shelby County Environmental Court.
Last Wednesday, the Memphis Police Department temporarily shut down the Home 1 Extended Stay on American Way.

The Shelby County District Attorney sought to close it permanently.
“This property continues to pose a serious threat to the safety of this community,” said Col. Tara Gates of the Memphis Police Department last Wednesday.
Police said there have been hundreds of calls to 911 over the course of a year, including reports of drug overdoses, prostitution, and violent crimes.
Owner Kalpesh Patel has repeatedly said much of the crime comes from people trespassing on the property, not his guests. “When we report to police officers, they don’t do nothing on it,” he explained last week.
Over the weekend, Patel sent multiple videos to FOX13 of his attempts to kick people off the property.

On Tuesday, FOX13 spotted armed security guarding the motel.
Judge Dandridge decided the motel must remain closed ahead of a trial on April 7th.
Attorneys will then debate whether it can stay open.
