Man charged with assaulting National Guardsmen has previous indictment for assaulting first responders

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A man who has been charged with aggravated assault on law enforcement after allegedly hitting a member of the National Guard on Beale Street early Sunday morning has been indicted before for assaulting a first responder.

Court documents show that Deangelo Smith was charged with two counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement after he allegedly hit a National Guardsmen while on Beale Street early Sunday morning; however, this was not the first instance in which Smith has faced charges related to attacking a first responder.

In 2025, Smith was indicted on two counts of aggravated assault on a first responder and one count of aggravated assault as an offensive act.

On February 12, 2025, court documents show, Smith flagged down a Memphis Police car and asked the officers for a ride home because he’d been drinking; however, when they arrived to the Trinity Lakes Apartments, Smith refused to get out of the squad car.

According to the affidavit, when the officers went to remove Smith from the car, he spat in one of their faces, kicked one in the chest, bit another on the arm when they tried to pin him down to keep him from spitting again, pushed and kicked more officers, spat on another, kicked the open door of the squad car into one officer’s face, and spat on an off duty officer who happened to live in the complex and was trying to help the others with the arrest.

That case was moved over to the Grand Jury in August 2025, who issued the aggravated assault charges; that indictment is still open, with the next court date being a bond arraignment in May.

Court documents show that Smith was on Beale Street early Saturday morning when the National Guard showed up to help out the Memphis Police Department with multiple fight calls at a restaurant. According to the affidavit, after the breakup of one fight, Smith was seen by a Military Police Officer “aggressively chest bump” another National Guardsmen; that officer then confronted Smith, who aggressively chest bumped him as well.

The affidavit says those Guardsmen then detained Smith until he was arrested and taken to 201 Poplar by Memphis Police.
