2 Shelby County deputies relieved of duty following assault in Cordova, SCSO confirms

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — Two Shelby County deputies — including one recently recognized as a hero for an on-the-job rescue — were arrested Sunday for aggravated assault, police said.

According to the Memphis Police Department (MPD), Jhyunn Armstrong, 30, and Israel Muhammad, 27, were arrested following an assault in Cordova. Further details about the incident were not released.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that both deputies were relieved of duty without pay while the investigation played out.

Muhammad was previously recognized by FOX13 as one of the deputies who helped save two boys from a frozen pond earlier this year. The deputy was treated for hypothermia after jumping into the water to rescue a 12-year-old.
