PREP ROUNDUP: High school, middle school teams earn Monday wins

Multiple area teams were in action at home and on the road Monday afternoon and evening.

At the high school level, the Coffee County softball team opened its week with a trip to Cookeville for a Class 4A District 9 matchup. The Lady Raiders took care of business quickly, holding the Lady Cavaliers scoreless on the way to a 15-0 victory in three-and-a-half innings.

Coffee County came away with 11 hits, including two each for Lily Norman and Maggie Montgomery. One of Norman’s two hits came as a home run in the top of the first inning. Ella Arnold, Kenzie Shelton, Cara Newlin, Bailey Hale, Raelyn Wainwright, Haleigh Skipper and Madison Waller each had one hit.

The Lady Raiders also had 12 RBI, led by Montgomery with three. Newlin, Norman and Wainwright followed with two each. Arnold, Shelton and Hale each had one RBI.

Norman pitched the first two innings, striking out six and holding Cookeville to one walk in this span. Yeidy Cruz closed it out in the bottom of the third inning and added three strikeouts to complete the team no-hitter.

Coffee County (8-8, 1-1 district) resumes district play at home game against Shelbyville Central Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.

High School Baseball

Raiders win tight one over Warren

Coffee County baseball picked up its first Class 4A District 9 win of the season in McMinnville Monday evening. Taking on Warren County, the Red Raiders scored a pair of runs in the first and second innings en route to a 2-0 victory.

Coffee County posted seven hits over the course of the game, with two each for Davis McKenzie and Grayson Sadler. Preston Steele, Boone Floyd and Jaxon Pruitt each had one hit.

McKenzie had the team’s lone RBI.

On the mound, McKenzie finished with eight strikeouts, one hit and four walks until coming off in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn the win. Kasen Shores took his place, securing the last two strikeouts to seal the win and pick up the save.

Coffee County (11-6, 1-2 district) returns home to host the Pioneers at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

High School Tennis

CHS falls to Tullahoma

The Coffee County tennis team was back in action Monday, hosting Tullahoma at Raider Academy. Both the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders fell to their respective rival squads by scores of 2-5.

In boys’ singles, Coffee County’s Aidan Hayes took down Carter Woodard by a score of 8-6. The doubles team of Colin Bryant and Christian Galindo added a win as well, defeating the team of Woodard and Stijn Heekmann, 8-3.

On the girls’ side, Isabelle Saner won 8-6 over Mae Reed. Kati McInturff also won her match, coming out on top 8-3 over Adyson Orr.

Coffee County remains at home to host Cannon County at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

Middle School Softball

Lady Rockets hold off Cannon

Westwood softball returned to action for the first time since March 18 with a home game against Cannon County Monday evening. After putting up four runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Lady Rockets were able to preserve their lead and pick up a 6-4 win.

Westwood connected on nine hits over the course of the game, led by Elly Wild and McKenna Kehely with two each. Maleah Chavis, Harper Hiles, Paisley Prater, Callie Kapise and Izzy Sartain each had one hit.

Kehely was credited with two of the team’s four RBI. Hiles and Kapise had one RBI each.

Kehely also pitched a complete game, striking out 16 and holding Cannon County to four hits, four runs and four walks across all seven innings.

Westwood (2-4) remains at home to host Fayetteville City Tuesday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

CCMS holds on to beat DeKalb

The Lady Raiders were back on the field for the first time since March 20 Monday evening. Traveling to DeKalb County, Coffee County did just enough to return home with a 2-0 victory.

Amaya Campbell had the Lady Raiders’ only hit.

Campbell also went the distance in the circle, striking out six and holding DeKalb County to two hits through all five innings.

The win put Coffee County at 9-2 on the season.

Middle School Baseball

Westwood takes care of Community

The Rockets opened their week with a high-scoring home game Monday.

Hosting Community, Westwood brought in five runs in the bottom of the first inning on the way to an 11-8 victory in front of their home crowd at Fred Deadman Park.

Max Stewart, Brock Christian, Casen Francisco, Luke Christian, Owen Holder and Jackson Vernon each had one hit for a team total of six.

The Rockets finished the game with five RBI, including two each for Holder and Luke Christian. Vernon had one.

Brock Christian got it started on the mound, coming off in the top of the third inning with four strikeouts, one hit, four runs and five walks. Luke Christian took his place, adding six strikeouts, seven hits, four runs and two walks until getting pulled in the top of the seventh. Will Levengood came on to close it out, striking out one more batter on the way to the win.

Westwood (8-6) welcomes Cannon County for a 5:30 p.m. game Tuesday.
