Mississippi DA addresses video showing teens fighting with driver during ‘scam’
HERNANDO, Miss. – A bold warning after a viral video of a teen fighting with a driver.
The DeSoto County District Attorney reminds potential thieves people carry guns to protect themselves.
DA Matthew Barton said it shows two teenagers approaching a vehicle in Hernando and trying to “scam” the person inside.
The video shows one of the teenagers fighting with the driver and, at one point, nearly climbing inside his truck.
Hernando police said they’re investigating.
In a statement Barton said, “If you approach someone’s car under false pretenses and attempt to steal from them, you are creating a situation that could escalate quickly and dangerously.”
He said the teens will go to youth court, but he may consider trying them as adults. His full statement is below:
“By now, most people in DeSoto County have seen the viral video circulating of two Memphis juveniles approaching a vehicle in Hernando and attempting to scam an unsuspecting citizen.
Let me be clear: this kind of behavior was reckless, and frankly, very stupid.
These hip gangster wannabes are playing a dangerous game.
Around here, people carry. People protect themselves and their families. If you put someone in fear for their life or grievous bodily harm, don’t be surprised by how that ends.
If you approach someone’s car under false pretenses and attempt to steal from them, you are creating a situation that could escalate quickly and dangerously.
Now let’s talk about the suspects. They’re juveniles, which means Youth Court is usually where these cases are handled. But if Youth Court declined to retain jurisdiction, and the law allows it, my office will be ready and willing to prosecute these Memphis juveniles as adults.
We are working closely with our law enforcement partners to ensure appropriate action is taken.
Let me say this as clearly as possible: DeSoto County is not Memphis. This is not a soft target. If you come here looking to prey on our people, you are going to face legal consequences, OR WORSE!”
