Attorney: ‘Multiple shooters’ involved in Shelby Farms Senior Skip Day shooting

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — A 16-year-old boy charged in the shooting death of another teen at Shelby Farms Park during a Senior Skip Day event last week is facing a possible transfer to adult court, his attorney told FOX13.

The teen, whose identity has not been released because he’s a minor, was charged with several offenses — including first-degree murder — in the fatal shooting that happened at the popular park just after noon Tuesday, April 14.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office identified the shooting victim as 17-year-old Coriuan Bean.

Three days later, SCSO announced the arrest of the 16-year-old.

The boy was also charged with criminal attempted first-degree murder, reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and three counts of aggravated assault, the sheriff’s office said.

The boy’s attorney, Arthur Horne, told FOX13 that since this is a crime involving a gun, the boy will remain in custody in the jail. Horne said the boy is on the transfer docket to determine if his case will be transferred to adult criminal court since he was charged with first-degree murder.

Horne said he’s still waiting to get evidence from the investigation, but he could argue self-defense for his client because there was more than one shooter involved.

“What we determined is one that the government’s star witness was a shooter; that’s the first thing. And two, that there were multiple shooters involved that day. And as I told you earlier, we’ve had witnesses that have started to come forward potentially that will say this other shooter was the one that was the first aggressor,” Horne told FOX13.

The boy’s transfer hearing is scheduled for May 4.
