Coffee County Fair concludes

The Coffee County Fair officially concluded its nine-day run with a mud-race Saturday, Sept. 7, following more than a week of entertainment and events.
In addition to events ranging from a karaoke contest to a Monster Truck Show, the fair also featured its usual lineup of classic fair food sold at booths operated by local nonprofits.
Vincent Lawrence of Mission Church said it was their third year operating a food booth at the Coffee County Fair.
“We always wanted to have a food booth out here and Wesley Heights Church was looking to get out and we were looking to take over their food booth and carry on with the great tradition that they had,” he said.
Lawrence said the busiest day for business was the last Friday of fair week, but the community has really come out to support them.
“100% this year, it has been great,” Lawrence said. “Not just our booth but every booth out here. The community came out, the people were here.”
Some of Mission Church’s most popular items included chili cheese fries, chili cheese dogs and hamburgers.
Matt Carr of the Manchester Rotary Club was also busy working Saturday, frying up fresh funnel cakes at a booth the club operates with 4-H.
“It has been great, we have met a lot of nice people and we sold a bunch of funnel cakes,” Carr said.
A first-time funnel cake volunteer, Carr said he wanted to volunteer his time to help operate the booth during fair week.
“I used to be in 4-H when I was young and I am in Rotary now and 4-H and Rotary team up to raise some money for scholarships and some good things like that,” he said.
Carr said he believes the key to a good funnel cake is getting the consistency of the batter “just right.”
