Wiegand
Mary Frances (Teal) Wiegand, age 95 of Burlingame, Calif., died on Friday, 26 May 2023, at home from complications arising from ovarian cancer. Mary Frances was born on Sept. 16, 1927 to Horace L. and Annie Teal in Manchester. She graduated from David Lipscomb College in Nashville in 1949 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. She taught math in several high schools before the Air Force recruited her to program computers in 1954. Although her initial assignment was at the Pentagon, the Air Force soon transferred her to the Arnold Engineering Development Complex in Tullahoma, to develop a computer program to test the performance of jet engines virtually. In this role, she met Jack Wiegand, an engineer from New Jersey whose employer, Curtiss-Wright, had temporarily assigned him to the same facility. They were married in June 1957, and enjoyed nearly 54 years together until Jack died from kidney cancer in March 2011. Although Frances had a distinctively southern accent, she rapidly adapted to life in New Jersey. She retired from computer programming, but she frequently tutored high school students from her neighborhood and church in math from algebra through calculus. She was also active in the Fairlawn Church of Christ, frequently leading Bible studies for women and youth, and contributing time to the congregation’s benevolent work, particularly in the assistance of recent immigrants from countries as diverse as Haiti and South Korea. Her two sons, John, born in 1960, and Walter, born in 1963, kept her busy during the early years of her marriage. After both sons had left home for college, she and Jack had more opportunities for travel, both domestic and international. In addition to numerous trips to visit their sons, their destinations were as close as the Jersey shore and as distant as Australia. After Jack died, Frances continued to live in New Jersey. In 2016, she decided to move to Burlingame to enjoy the California climate and to be close to her son John. In California, she continued to be active in church, and to travel both independently and with her sons. Frances requested that anyone planning to send flowers please refrain and instead make a donation to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance at https://ocrahope.org/get-involved/donate/honor-loved-one?form=FUNFNBYFHKJ or the Florida College “James R. Cope Adopt Program” Scholarship Fund athttps:/loridacollege.edu’give/make-a-gift/. Frances is survived by two sons, John of Burlingame, CA, and Walter and his wife Emily of Clarendon Hills, Ill. two grandsons, Nathan of Boston, Mass., and Joel, of Bloomington Ind.; and one brother, LA Teal of Manchester. A memorial service was held at the Pleasant View Church of Christ in Pleasanton, Calif. on July 8, 2023.
