High School Basketball mid-season report

With both high school basketball games being postponed this week, now is a good time to take a look into how the Lady Raiders and Red Raiders are doing so far this season.

CCCHS Lady Raiders

As of writing, the Lady Raiders are 18-3 overall with a 2-0 district record, are ranked fifth in the TSSAA Class 4A AP Poll, and ranked seventh in the state on MaxPreps.com’s rankings.

The Lady Raiders are a perfect 9-0 at home this season, with a 5-0 mark on the road and a 4-3 record in neutral site games. 

On offense, the Lady Raiders are averaging 57.7 points per game with their best scoring effort coming in their first game of the year against Cane Ridge, where the Lady Raiders put up 79 points in a 79-31 victory.

Defensively, the Lady Raiders are allowing 41.5 points per game and their best defensive performance came in their Dec. 8 game at Blackman, where the Lady Raiders surrendered just 21 points in a 56-21 win.

In their Dec. 29 game against McMinn Central, the Lady Raiders scored a season low 33 points and allowed a season high 69 points in a 69-33 loss.

The Lady Raiders have four different players averaging double digits in points, with Natalie Barnes leading the charge at 15.1 points per game and she has led the team in scoring in nine games this season.

Olivia Vinson averages 13.9 points per game this season and has led the team in six games, while Jules Ferrell is averaging 11.7 points per game and has led the team in three games.

Though Channah Gannon hasn’t played since going out with an ankle injury in the Nov. 28 contest against Blackman, she is averaging 10.4 points per game in the eight games she has played so far this season, and has led the team in two of those contests.

The best single game scoring performance by a Lady Raider this season is a tie between Barnes’s 25 point performance against Ravenwood on Dec. 9, and Vinson’s 25 point game against Kingston on Dec. 28.

Some notable games for the Lady Raiders this season include a 55-32 win over McMinn Central on Nov. 24, a 55-46 loss to Bradley Central on Nov. 25,  a 59-52 loss to Brentwood in double overtime on Dec. 16, the previously mentioned 69-33 loss to McMinn Central on Dec. 29, a 73-61 win over district rival Shelbyville on Jan. 9 and a 49-37 win at Columbia on Jan. 12.

CCCHS Red Raiders

Meanwhile, the Red Raiders are 10-10 overall with a 1-1 district record.

At home, the Red Raiders have a 2-5 record and they are 3-2 on the road with a 5-3 record at neutral site games.

Offensively, the Red Raiders are averaging 52.5 points per game with their best scoring performance coming in a 72-66 loss to the DAR Patriots on Dec. 27, where the Red Raiders scored 66 points and also gave up a season high 72 points.

The lowest scoring output by the Red Raiders came in their Nov. 28 game against Blackman, where the Red Raiders scored a season low 28 points in a 50-28 loss.

On the defensive side, the Red Raiders are allowing 53.5 points per game with their season low being 33 points allowed in their 59-33 win over Prattville on Dec. 28 and in their 38-33 win over Shelbyville on Jan. 9.

The Red Raiders have two players averaging double digits in points this season, with Cooper Reed leading the way at 16.2 points per game and has led the team in 10 games this season.

Jackson Shemwell is currently averaging 12.9 points per game and has led the team in eight contests this year.

Brady Wright is also having a respectable season, averaging 7.6 points per game and has led the team in one game this season.

The best single game scoring performance by a Red Raider this season was Cooper Reed’s 32 point game against Central Magnet on Nov. 18.

Some games of note for the Red Raiders this season include their season-opening, 50-47 loss to Cane Ridge on Nov. 14, a 43-40 loss at Blackman on Dec. 8, a thrilling 63-57 overtime win over Tullahoma on Dec. 15, a 49-46 win over Nolensville on Dec. 20 and a 61-60 loss to Dyersburg on Dec. 22.

Coffee County High School Basketball returns on Tuesday, Jan. 23 against Spring Hill.
